several trips to the east, and one was wagon train and she made one tripback by ship around the tip
of South America, (also know as the Horn).

Was a farmer, carpenter and a member of the Methodist Church.Moved fromMD to IL when he was nine and back to WV when he was
twelve.
Grandpa was a carpenter, He built, or helped build, several houses in thearea around his home. He built his own house in the early 1900's. Theold house stood behind the new one and he used the old house for hisworkshop.He was a Master broom maker. He turned rolling Pins and gavelson a wood lathe powered by a gasoline engine. Small rocking chair he madefor his daughter Ethel Leona Smith as a wedding gift was passed onto hisgrandaughter Mildred Olive Gilkey Brown and to her daughter Carol JoyceBrown Morrison. From the time he was twelve years old he lived on thesame farm in Doddridge County, West Virginia. Grandmother FlorenceZonetta Cox Smith, died on 31, December,1913, Grandpa married Anna Dixonin 1915. Anna had a nervous breakdown a few years after they weremarried and never fully recovered. Grandpa had a small iron skillet hemade cornbread in and they say is was good.He hated dogs for some reason.In his younger days he would run them off of his farm, but the Wells hada hunting dog named Betty and after they moved in the little house downon the run, he had to change his mind about dogs. It was told that forseveral years he and the mail carrier, John Lewis, was so contrary theywouldn't hand each other the mail. Grandpa would meet the mail carrier atthe mailbox and would put the mail in the box so John would have to leandown, from his horse, to get it. Likewise John would put the mail in thebox and shut the door, instead of handing it to Grandpa. He never smokedor drank, he attended the Oak Grove Church when he could. All the yearshe was raising his family he never made more than a dollar and a half aday. Grandpa and Grandma took in boarders when they were drilling gaswells in that area. Grandma never saw all of the children together,because Sadie and Albert had left home before Edith and Virgil were born.Grandpa saw them all together one time, at one of the reunions in the1920's. Grandpa was strict when the kids were growing up; his son Russellmade the remark over his dad's casket "You gave me many a lick, I did'tdeserve." In the 1930's Russell took his father to Westernport, Maryland,to visit his sister Florence Amelia, whom he hadn't seen in over 35years.
